CIHR invests $2.1M to advance aging research using CLSA data

If you are the recipient of a CIHR Catalyst Grant for the analysis of CLSA data, you do not need to submit to one of the application deadlines. Please contact access@clsa-elcv.ca for special instructions.

Thirty research teams from across Canada have received a combined total of more than $2.1 million in federal funding to support analyses of data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to advance our understanding of the aging process and the factors that influence how Canadians age.

The 2025 Catalyst Grant: Analysis of CLSA Data was launched, under the leadership of the CIHR Institutes of Aging (IA) and Population and Public Health (IPPH), to raise awareness around the availability of CLSA data as new data releases are completed, as well as to catalyze and support the research of Canadian researchers using available CLSA data across all four health research themes.

Support was provided by partners including the CIHR Institutes of Cancer Research (ICR), Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA), Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD), Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA); and in partnership with the CIHR Brain Health and Cognitive Impairment in Aging (BHCIA) Research Initiative and the Quebec Network for Research on Aging (RQRV).

The CIHR Institute of Aging (IA) and the BHCIA Research Initiative funded and co-funded twelve of the thirty projects

CIHR has awarded more than $13 million in funding to a total of 186 teams of Canadian researchers since the first CIHR catalyst grant to analyze CLSA data was launched in 2016. The most recent awards mark the seventh competition.

The CLSA is a strategic initiative of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Funding for the CLSA platform has been provided by the Government of Canada through the CIHR and the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Additional support has been provided by several provinces, affiliated universities, and research institutions across Canada.
