Project Summary

Intrinsic capacity (IC) reflects an individual’s overall physical and mental abilities to function and live independently with age. It focuses on capabilities—such as mobility, cognition, senses, mood, and energy—rather than diseases. For instance, someone with arthritis may still have high IC if they remain active, while others without illness may have low IC due to cognitive or physical decline. Although assessing IC is simple and vital for promoting healthy aging, it is rarely done due to time constraints and a lack of tools. In collaboration with partners in Ireland, Spain and Australia, we’ve developed methods to measure IC using data from 14,000 older adults. We now propose using CLSA data to refine these methods and incorporate artificial intelligence for efficient clinical use. This project will create practical IC measurement tools and educational resources for health professionals, improving care by focusing on resilience and function in aging.
