Project Summary

Loneliness and social isolation are public health priorities among older adults in Canada, with approximately 10% of Canadians aged 55 years and older reporting always or often feeling lonely. Features of built and climate environments, such as surface temperature, access to green space, and neighbourhood walkability in cities, may be associated with reduced loneliness and social isolation. Mode of transportation (driving, walking, and public transportation) may modify this association, as mobility limitations prevent accessing the environment. In this study, we aim to estimate the longitudinal association of built environments with the occurrence of loneliness and social isolation among middle-aged and older Canadians. Uniquely, this longitudinal study will evaluate whether mode of transportation changes the effect of built environments on social isolation and loneliness.
