Project Summary
Canada’s population is facing rising rates of frailty, where weakened bodily systems reduce resilience. Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and strength, worsens frailty and mobility. Osteoarthritis, closely linked to frailty and sarcopenia, creates a cycle of worsening health, particularly in females who are more commonly affected. Understanding the connections between these conditions is vital for improving care. This study examines the relations between frailty, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis in older adults, assessing how lifestyle factors like activity, vaccines, optimal medication, social interactions, and diet (AVOID) influence these links. We will test how frailty changes are associated with sarcopenia and osteoarthritis. We will examine the impact of lifestyle behaviours from the AVOID Frailty program on musculoskeletal health outcomes. This research will improve understanding of frailty and musculoskeletal health, informing better treatments and public health strategies.
