Project Summary
Hypertension Canada will publish updated clinical practice guidelines for primary care in 2025. In an effort to improve hypertension care, it is expected that the guidelines will provide simplified recommendations related to the diagnosis of hypertension (with a single threshold of >=130/80 mmHg) and single treatment target (systolic blood pressure under 130 mmHg). The proposed changes will have a large impact on the epidemiology of hypertension in Canada. The changes are particularly relevant to middle-aged and older adults Canadians, who have the highest prevalence of hypertension and many who are at risk for adverse effects of therapy. Addressing this, the present study will evaluate the impact of the updated Hypertension Canada guidelines in participants of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. The aims of the study are to evaluate the effect on the prevalence, diagnosis, risk factors, control and adverse effects of therapy among middle- and older-aged participants in the CLSA.
