Project Summary

Obesity is a major risk factor for several chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. When these conditions occur together, called cardiometabolic multimorbidity, they significantly increase the risk of poor health outcomes. This study will use data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging to examine how different measures of body fat, such as body mass index, waist size, and newer indicators of body shape and fat distribution, relate to the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity. We will also assess which measures are best at identifying individuals at higher risk. In addition, we will investigate whether these relationships differ across population subgroups, including by age, sex, ethnicity, and physical activity level. The findings will help improve screening tools and support better prevention strategies for chronic diseases in Canada’s aging population.
