This table summarizes the data that may be requested through the CLSA’s online application system, Magnolia. An ‘x’ indicates the data modules that are currently available for request (‘-’ indicates that this module was not collected while a blank cell indicates that the module is not yet available). The CLSA only accepts applications for data that are included in this table at the time of submission. Applications proposing the use of data that are not included in this table will not be considered for review, and you will need to re-apply once those data become available. This table will be updated regularly to reflect changes in data availability.

    Important notes:

  • Please see footnotes for additional information when indicated
  • Please refer to the Researcher Resources section (e.g., questionnaires, data dictionaries, data support documentation) of the CLSA’s website for details on each module
  • The letters within the parentheses refer to the root of the variable name, and in some cases, the corresponding module
  • Datasets do not include identifiable information collected (e.g., name, contact information, date of birth, health insurance number, and full postal code)
  • Datasets include sampling weights

Notes:

Census Subdivision Codes and Names are determined using the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) from Statistics Canada. A census subdivision (CSD) is a geographic unit, roughly corresponding to municipalities, whose unique codes can be linked to other sociodemographic or census data.

Due to the sensitive nature of these geographic indicators, a special request must be made to receive CSDs and FSAs as part of your dataset. Adequate justification must be provided within the project description (Application Part 1) as well as in the Geographic Indicators section of the Data Checklist. By requesting these data, you also agree that you will not present in any form (presentation, publication, poster), an illustration of these geographic areas with fewer than 50 CLSA participants per FSA or CSD. For more information, please contact access@clsa-elcv.ca.

Notes:

A forward sortation area (FSA) is a geographic region in which all postal codes start with the same three characters.

Notes:

To request these data, adequate justification must be provided within the project description (Application Part 1) as well as in the Images and Raw Data section of the Data Checklist, explaining how these data will help to achieve proposed objectives, describing how they will be analysed, and providing evidence, if available, that you have the experience and resources to work with these types of data (i.e. references of publications). Please note that the request for images and raw data usually incurs additional costs beyond the current data access fee, and these are outlined in the Fees section of our website. Requests for images and raw data may prolong the processing time of your application, and it may take longer to receive these data than the six months to receive alphanumeric data. COVID-19 DATA

COVID-19 Data

Questionnaire Study Data (N= 28,565)10 x
Seroprevalence Study Data (N= 19,334)11 x

Notes:

10The CLSA COVID-19 Questionnaire study collected longitudinal data from April 2020 to December 2020. The baseline and final exit questionnaire captured information on COVID-19 symptoms and status, risk factors, healthcare use, health behaviours, psychosocial and economic consequences of the pandemic. The weekly, biweekly, and monthly questionnaires focused on symptoms, COVID status, and behaviours.

11The CLSA COVID-19 Seroprevalence Study collected blood samples and questionnaire data from October 2020 to July 2021 with an overall objective to estimate age and sex specific prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in older adults by all provinces. The questionnaire captured information about COVID-19 status, COVID-19 symptoms, housing, risk factors, risk acquisitions, and health behaviours related to the virus. Participants either provided a venous blood sample at a CLSA data collection site or a dried blood spot sample using a home collection kit.

HEALTHY BRAINS, HEALTHY AGING (HBHA) Initiative

Stool Microbiome, Brain MRI & Cognition

Healthy Brains, Healthy Aging (HBHA) is a substudy of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) Comprehensive Cohort. Baseline data were collected during CLSA Follow-ups 3 and 4 from 6,151 participants, including 6,041 stool samples. A subset of 2,373 participants completed structural and functional MRI scans and three CANTAB cognitive assessments. Combined MRI and stool sample data are available for 2,263 participants, of whom 2,223 also have cognitive data. Follow-up data collection is ongoing during Follow-ups 4 and 5. Raw MRI images are not currently available. Access to HBHA data is governed by standard CLSA data access policies and requires a dedicated application.
