Participation
Participation in the CLSA involves two different groups. Your participation may involve a simple telephone interview only or you may have been contacted to be part of a home interview and a visit to a data collection site (DCS) in your area.
Telephone Interview Only
What can I expect if I am part of the CLSA?
- A trained CLSA interviewer will conduct a 30 minute telephone interview with you at a time that suits you.
- You will be contacted again every three years to do a full telephone interview lasting 60-70 minutes. In between these full interviews, you will be contacted for a brief “update” interview.

Home Interview and Visit to Data Collection Site (DCS)
What will I be asked to do if I volunteer to be part of the CLSA?
You will be asked to:
- Agree to a home interview every 3 years, where you will share information about your personal background, health history and lifestyle,
- Visit a CLSA data collection site (DCS) in your area every 3 years to have physical measures taken such as blood pressure and bone density measurements,
- Agree to be contacted by telephone halfway between each home interview/DCS visit to answer questions about your health, social situation and behaviours.
You will also be asked to:
- Provide blood and urine samples that will be analyzed to learn about aspects of biology and the genetics of aging, health and disease.
- Allow researchers to link the information you provide to healthcare or other databases held by public institutions (for example, provincial Ministries of Health keep databases about your visits to doctors, hospital admissions, medication prescriptions or mortality records).
